Cycling Rutland Water
23 miles of mostly traffic free cycling around Rutland Water and it’s peninsular. For those looking for a shorter route there is the family trail (8 miles) that runs from Normanton to Whitwell. This part of the trail is flat tarmac, all off road and can also be done in reverse.
The peninsular trail (15 miles) starts at Whitwell and heads out towards Oakham and around the Hambleton peninsular before looping back. This route has mixed terrain with some hills and sometimes runs close to the road.
To cycle around the water excluding the peninsular is 17 miles.
A choice of bikes are available to hire at Normanton and Whitwell from mountain bikes to hybrid and fully electric bikes, kids buggy’s/trailers are also available. If you have your own bikes you can pick up the cycle path in either direction right outside of our gate!
Cycling around Rutland water is a truly wonderful way to spend the day. There are plenty of picturesque places to stop and take a break or have some lunch. Stop for a breather at Normanton Church, the Lyndon visitor centre or somewhere in between if you prefer a quieter spot. BBQs are permitted in most places as long as you are responsible. Join the crowds and enjoy the atmosphere at Normanton where you can get right down to the water or head away slightly to find your own secluded spot. As most people don’t like to be too far away from their cars you can easily find a quite spot if you move away from the main car parks, its surprising how easy it is to feel like you have the place all to yourself even on the busiest of days.
From The Hide at Manton Bay you can cycle to Normanton church past the sailing club in under 30 minutes.
